Description
On a wall in the western side of the Ta Prohm Temple complex is a renowned stone carving that appears at first glance to depict a stegosaurus but is more likely that of a cow or rhinoceros. What is often mistaken for the stegosaurus’s ‘plates’ are petals of a floral motif. The thought, however unlikely, that prehistoric beasts once lived alongside humans inspired this illustration of the royal army entering the city of Angkor Thom through the Tonle Om Gate–which contemporaneous accounts suggust would have been colourfully painted–at the peak of the Angkor Empire.
